Project Overview

Developing a wellness and exercise app that focuses on fitness activities and exercises, food, and suggested brands; this app will dive deep into the different phases of the women's cycle from each stage of the menstruation cycle, pregnancy, and pre and post-menopausal phases. For each phase of the cycle exercises suggestions and food will adapt. Exercises can also be adjusted on difficulty levels and lifestyle.

Problem Statement

How might we better understand physical and conditional requirements of women (especially pregnant and older women) throughout life so that we can give them a resource to help them live healthier lifestyles in a more effective and personal way?

Timeline

Research & Methodolgy

We talked to the users about:

  • Their current routines

  • What motivates them

  • Nutrition as well as exercise

  • Things they look for in a useful resource

We talked to the experts about:

  • How people approach an expert about questions

  • Resources for self-education

  • Nutrition as well as exercise

  • Importance of tracking progress

  • Best exercises and nutrition for people of various conditions

We interviewed 9 people across our 3 user types as well as more interviews with professionals including doctors, personal trainers, and nutritionists.

It was important for us to reach out to all the people we can to gain as much knowledge from our users as well as learning the right information from the experts.

We started out by preparing and sending out surveys to get as many responses as we could from our potential users as well as experts.

Research Results

    • Tracking nutrition and exercise is pertinent to the user understanding and achieving their goals It is essential when you are communicating to a professional- It gives them insight to your progress.

    • As a person ages, the bone density and muscle mass decreases, so strength training and stretching is vital to reducing injury.

    • Less intense workouts during certain phases of the cycle

    • Many people don’t know their bodies as well as they think they do

    • Experts spend their lives learning the ins and outs of exercise and nutrition, but people need to self-educate themselves as well because there just isn’t a way to learn it all from an expert in a 30 min. appointment.

    • They really want balance between eastern and western medicine. They don’t trust doctors as much

    • Nutrition was more important to users than the exercise

    • Older participants are more interested in being active

    • Working out helps when experiencing pain

    • In pregnant participants, experiencing pain is more common

    • Motivation comes from those closest to the participant- usually a partner

    • Learning resources are limited

    • Most apps only touch on specific resources

    • Most people want to exercise more but don’t know the best ways to do so effectively.

Persona

We tested users based on our prototype and our 3 persona types.

Usability Test

During this usability test, we want to understand what features the users find most important, along with finding any way finding issues. We are testing users looking for both qualitative and quantitative feedback.

Next Steps

    • Older generations struggled with font sizes; however, color contrast presented well.

    • The visual hierarchy of categories and features was out of order and needed rearranging.

    • Breadcrumbs should have been included in our initial design. During testing, we found users struggling with navigating.

    • The landing page had mixed reviews on whether their needed to be more information. We have updated to reorganize the page with better hierarchy and spacing.

    • By increasing fidelity it made a significant impact, but the level of detail and information we needed to add made the designs clearer to users.

    • Overall, we learned that the features we chose to focus on are the most valuable ones from the user’s perspective.

    • Branching out to other areas of inclusivity

    • Sleep Tracking and Education

    • Mental Health Impacts

    • “Ask an Expert”

    • Brand Partners

    • Compatibility with Apple Watch or similar exercise tools
